Can a Poe Switch Be Used as a Normal Switch?
Can you mix POE and Not-POE devices on the same POE switch? I am setting up a pocket-size network for a client and they do non accept the funds for ii dissimilar networks. Can you put PCs on the same POE switch as a SIP phone?
Yeah, PoE will only send ability if it requested by the device. Otherwise the switch just interacts with it as if information technology were a regular switch.

Yes, PoE will only ship power if it requested by the device. Otherwise the switch only interacts with information technology as if it were a regular switch.

+1 to Sosipater.
Yes, this is washed all of the time (mixing of PoE and non-PoE devices on the aforementioned switch). Some switches even back up powering down the PoE office on switch ports if necessary. I have used this function to remotely reboot the PoE device, but the setting could be left in the off land besides. Doing this may cause issues afterward if ports are reassigned.
The reason why you can os that poe uses two of 4 wire in the cat5/6 that not used for whatsoever thing

Your question has been answered, but I wanted to add together, that it'due south actually necessary. If you accept a 12 port switch for example, and used all 12 ports for POE devices, I don't know of whatsoever switches that tin really supply power all the ports at one time.
VoIP is getting more popular, then maybe the newer switches can, but I haven't seen whatever.

Depends on your vendor / price indicate. Cisco (not Linksys, Cisco) switches do POE on all ports simultaneously. Whatsoever switches that are designed to work in VoIP installations generally do it equally well.
+ane on Cisco.
Nosotros have Cisco VOIP phones on all our desks and these then feed in to our PCs so all our connections on our Cisco border switches are PoE and I know nosotros have quite a few fully populated edge switches with no bug.
I think they may be two standards for PoE, the near contempo is a college volts/amps supply, not certain of the specifics so you may demand to check that the switch can supply sufficient power for your intended use.
You tin run this fine
Merely
Y'all knew this was coming , if your running phones and normal network devices you'll desire to put some form of quality of service into the switch for the phones then they have priority over the pcs and you don't end with call quality issues
Thanks all for the assist.
Can anyone recommend a goo eight - 12 port switch for use in this area. This application is for a new startup and I am not sure if Cisco will be in the budget. At that place are but three employees for now, just I desire to have a picayune room for expansion. My plan is to run 2 split up networks when they expand in a yr. They are willing to pay for quality equipment, just demand to watch the budget as well.
I don't think y'all get a 12 porter that will do qos and poe but this hp procurve could well fit. ..

There's a model with less wattage that may exist cheaper but the procurves accept a massive advantage of lifetime warrenty
Cheers. Anyone have a recommendation for an SMB router for the aforementioned use? I' similar to stay in the sub $500 range.

If past router you mean that you need a firewall to connect to your incoming internet connexion I'd await at a sonicwall - about the virtually stable pocket-size firewall that nosotros use for clients. Easy to manage, pretty much rock solid. Something in the TZ100 range would work well for 8-12 people. Pretty decent with VoIP, tin be deeply managed remotely. Prissy little boxes.
+ane for sonicwall. Information technology's on my wishlist.
